New Zealand – where to go for your adrenaline fix

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

We all know that New Zealand is the destination of choice when it comes to extreme sports but if it’s your first trip to the land down under, you need to know where to head for your adrenaline fix.

Franz Josef and Fox Glacier on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island provide the ultimate backdrop for the ultimate extreme sport: skydiving. This really is one of the most breathtaking places to take the plunge, offering panoramic views of glistening glaciers and snow capped peaks, including the tallest mountain in Australasia, Mts Cook. Lasting about 45 seconds, the freefall is an experience you’ll never forget, but it’s not until you’re gliding through the air on your parachute that you can fully appreciate the utter beauty of the natural surroundings.

If you like the sound of the scenery but jumping out of plane at 12,000 ft is just a little too daunting, why not have a go at ice-hiking through the glaciers themselves? Here you can discover cavernous crevices, gaping ice holes and ascend ice steps carved into the walls. But don’t be mistaken, the slippery conditions and at times terrifying altitude mean this is not an activity for the faint-hearted.

Skiing is another option thanks to New Zealands diverse climate and plethora of mountain peaks. While Queenstown is probably the most obvious choice for ski and snow-boarders, nearby Wanaka with its quaint, village-like feel, is also a great place to hit the slopes. Cardrona ski resort is an excellent choice for all skill-levels with great facilities.

Golf is another popular pastime in New Zealand, albeit a little less risky. If youve exhausted all the normal European hotspots then the North Island could be just the destination for you to indulge in a round or two. For the daring golfer, Kauri Cliffs golf resort in Matauri Bay will not disappoint. This immense championship course designed by David Harman boasts an incredible cliff top backdrop which has received worldwide acclaim.

For something slightly tamer, Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay is one of the most stunning golfing destinations in the South Pacific, boasting a challenging course broken up by vast gorges and gullies. The resort is also thoroughly secluded, being a twenty minute drive from the gates to the clubhouse alone. Designed by architect Tom Doak, the resort has gained status in golfing circles from hosting the prestigious Kiwi Challenge event.

Late Holiday Deals Can Result In Huge Savings!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
There are 2 basic ways to plan your next holiday and the first way often seems a little unfair due to the costs and time restraints involved.

The organized trip: This is suited mainly for families with young children or those tied to the work desk where they have to give notice of their main annual leave one year in advance. It may sound a little unfair but as we have what are called the ‘peak’ periods, it means that if there were no rules set down, many workplaces would be without staff, particularly during July and August. The downside to pre-booked peak period vacations of course, is that you’re not likely benefit from a late holiday deal.

The unorganized trip: Perfect for youths, single folks, and those who can get away from work at a moments notice. When I was living the selfish life of a bachelor, I managed to experience some of the best and most memorable vacations of my life. The buzz from not knowing quite where you might end up, or when, or for how long, is both exciting and adventurous.

Other benefits for unorganized traveling means that your are available for grabbing that late holiday deal, plus the choice to keep away from peak holiday periods where all the popular places are packed beyond belief and overcharge for everything. So, the late holiday deal does not only gives you great discounts at the drop of a hat, but if you time it right, it’s cheaper once you get there too, so the potential savings are huge depending where you go and for how long.

Most folks though, begin to plan their summer holidays in the midst of winter, and their winter vacations mid summer. If you really want to secure a particular place at a specific time, then panning ahead is a necessary evil. In 1997, I took the same holiday package as my sister to Thailand and it cost me half as much. I got to go during the Thai winter too (December/January) which guaranteed cloudless skies, warm sunshine, and almost zero humidity.

But late holiday deals can still be had by many taking the mini breaks which are perhaps not as regimented as their main summer vacation. As most of you are aware, many airlines offer cheaper tickets the earlier you book, but if you’re traveling off season, you can gamble and find much reduced fares just days before you are due to depart. Another late holiday deal trick, is to do as much of the arranging yourself as possible. Now, many folks don’t need the hassle, but if you’re looking to save a few bucks it really is worth the extra effort. I always call a couple of hotels direct and ask if they have any promotions going on. I’ve been real lucky with this simple tactic.

Actually, you might think it’s a little cheeky or underhanded but I will get a brochure from a travel agency, and pick out a trip which interests me. I’ll then break it down into transportation to and from airports, flights, accommodation, and insurance. I don’t worry about excursions because they can be had for a song on arrival should I want them. I then do a little online pricing to see what savings can be had. Sometimes, the package deals are very well put together by the agents, and therefore hard to beat, but quite often, you can make your own late holiday deal at a great saving.

But don’t rule out the travel agents altogether. There are a few in my town that have my personal contact details, and we have an arrangement where they call me whenever there is a late holiday deal available due to a last minute cancellation, or special promotion. There’s no obligation and it’s nice to be informed.

The best place to get practice with arranging your own late holiday deals is on the internet. Save a few of your favored airlines, hotels, and destinations to your favorite’s folders and have yourself a little check list handy so that you can tot up as you go along. It’s quite good fun as an exercise even if you have to immediate plans to go anywhere. Bon voyage!

The best way to secure your last minute holiday deal

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
ght (c) 2009 Casper da silva

Let’s commence with the watch words of the year Credit Crunch and reccession, and what it means for holiday seekers this season. I remember when I first started in the Travel Industry last century - I do laugh when I throw that one out - twenty two years ago going on holiday was a luxury to be cherished. By the late eighties quickly followed by the naughty nineties, going on holiday evolved from being a luxury shared by a small minority to becoming an absolute necessity shared by the masses and a way to keep your sanity for the rest of the year. It was also something to aspire to and look forward to and despite the saturation of the travel industry it still holds that certain magic for the great British public going away wanting to leave their humdrum lives behind and live the dream, catching the rays, looking at beautiful sunsets, tasting different foods meeting different people as well as enjoying the culture. Needless to say this year in 2009, there has been a bit of panic about whether going on holiday is going to be a possibility for most couples and families and the media’s ongoing credit crunch mantra hasn’t helped those with fears to the average traveller.

However, I am going to go on record and state with absolute confidence and clarity that this is going to be a dream year for last minute holidays and great bargains will be bountiful in this buyers market. However and there is a ‘however’ to consider you’d better know what to do and when. As any self respecting gambler will tell you, you just have to know when to gamble and when to fold. A last minute holiday booking does not necessarily mean booking your holiday a day before departure to get the best deal, a day before departure can sometimes mean you pay more than your counterpart who booked four weeks before you and sometimes six weeks. If I could count the times I have heard my clients kick themselves in the shin for playing with waiting on brilliant holiday offers they were given and decided to take a gamble and wait till a day before departure thinking they would get it even cheape than chips is in fact a silly gamble and it wont work in your favour. If you have a specific somewhere that you want to go to with a certain type of board in a particular resort, frankly you book your holiday a minimum four weeks before departure so that you can get your particular deal. If however you are the type who wants to just turn up at the airport with a suitcase not caring where you go as long as you get a bit of sun then a few days before departure for a great late holiday deal will suit you just fine.

Again word to the wise, gambling with a last minute holiday a day before a Bank Holiday or the start of any school holidays is a definite no-no, trying to find a suitable last minute holiday bargain a couple of days before you want to get away can be an extremely stressful exercise for a family with specific needs and requirements, so always start looking five to nine weeks before departure. Be prepared when booking a last minute holiday make sure your budget is accounted for on your debit or credit card, losing a holiday to something as routine as a ten minute account to account fund transfer. If you are sans debit or credit cards, then phone a friend or family member and ask them to help you out with the use of their card details which you of course repay, and make sure you have this in place before you start searching for your last minute holiday, as some offers need to be booked and paid for straight away or you may lose out on a great deal by the time you try and sort out ways to pay for your holiday. Remember no one holds options on last minute holidays anymore. You will find companies are more than willing to offer competitive prices, and it’s easy to get caught up in getting companies to compete with each other to get the best deals. But take too long and use too many companies to do your bidding war and it could end up you become the loser, as the electronic data been gathered by the operator gives them the idea that the demand on the holiday you are searching for is great and the price will go up. So snap up that fantastic lasty minute holiday, and do so with some defiance, 2009 is going to be one of the best years to find last minute holiday, so enjoy it!

If you are ready to get out of the daily routines of life, then it is time to consider taking a holiday.  If you don’t have a large budget to spend, then finding cheap holiday deals is a simple way to make sure you enjoy the small changes and escape from the normal, everyday life.  Knowing exactly what to look for and combining this with the best options for getting away is a simple way to make the most out of your trip away from home and into your personal paradise.

When you begin to look for cheap holiday deals, you want to make sure you use specific tips and tricks to get the discounts desired.  You can begin by deciding where your area of discovery is going to be.  Whether you want to lounge at the beach or venture through ancient history in another country, this will make a difference in exactly what you need for your trip as well as what deals are available.

Once you know the destined area, you can continue to find the best deals by setting a date for travel. For instance, if you go during peak seasons, then the discounts for your holiday may not be as low. Going during off seasons and planning during the time of year that fits best with your available time off allow you to get the most out of the trip.  If you are planning a trip during the peak seasons and holidays, then finding discounts with other alternatives may offer better value for getting to your destination.

The next step to finding cheap holiday deals is to add in everything that is needed for your adventure. The basic areas will provide flight and hotel accommodations to make sure you get the most out of your trip.  However, you can also find package holiday deals.  This provides you with an alternative to taking your trip at a discount.  These typically include the basic flight and accommodation combinations for a lower price.  You can also add in adventures, activities, extras and local transportation, such as a car, to get an even better deal.  The more you work with package deals, the better opportunities you will have to get the discounts you desire.

Whether you are looking to hit the mountain peaks or want to spend some time at the beach, you can make sure you get the most of your adventure by finding cheap holiday deals.  Knowing how to plan your trip and adding in specific ways to get discounts, such as through package holiday deals, offers you better options for getting out of the routine and into a relaxation spot.

Finding That Last Minute Holiday Deal

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
Yes there some great holiday deals out there - but it’s going to take some time to find them, and you may need to use the phone to book, but hey, the web is a really great place to search and find that elusive last minute holiday bargain. You really can get the best last minute holidays deal if you invest some time to shop around. According to a recent Which! survey what you pay depends on where you buy, as much as who you travel with. Before you start on your search for that last minute holiday take some time to consider the checklist below. If you remember these points when you are looking for your holiday that you might really end-up with that minute bargain, and not a last minute disaster. Beware of the tricks of the trade - although in recent yours UK trading Standards have cut down on many sharp practises used by some Tour Operators and Travel Agents With flights this is less of a problem because you know the flight time and the airline before you book. But with a last minute holiday, although you will know the flight times and the destination, you may not know where you will be staying. You may be told the ’standard’ of accommodation, but not where it will be. Sometimes if you are very lucky you’ll get that bargain but be prepared it might be a total disaster. The best advice is to be on your guard. Try to find out where you are going to stay and then do some research. The travel agent will usually know where you will stay before they sell you the holiday; if they don’t know, or won’t tell you, it’s best to assume the worst. But this year the Travel Companies are really struggling and there really are some fantastic holiday deals to be had - many of them just cannot afford not to sell a holidays even if it is at cost or at a loss. So buy an unnamed last minute holiday deal with no illusions . Truely hope for the best, but just be prepared for the worst and have a plan B in mind. Always ensure that you get the standard of accommodation you are expecting in writing, including what this standard means in terms of the facilities provided. Also, when you compare prices always look at the bottom line. Travel companies will often advertise an attractive headline price, but then add on other costs such as ‘ticket on departure’, in flight meals, transfers, travel insurance (which isn’t compulsory) and you do have time to shop around for an alternative insurance. Also check with your bank as most bank issues credit and indeed debit cards now come with some level of Travel Insurance. But as mentioned earlier the OFT has cut down a lot on this over the last 2 years and normally the price advertised up front should be the price you pay when you hit that confirm button. Good luck - good hunting - there are some great deals out there - you just got to find them.
